About Us

My Class Style

Typically a class will start with body and breath awareness, a warm up, followed by a flow style practice, leading to seated postures, and into deep nurturing relaxation and stillness. I look at offering inspiring sequences suitable for the season, what's going on in the world, incorporating Traditional Chinese Medicine, yoga philosophy, Vedic Meditation, some weeks we'll look at specific poses or joint complexes.

My gentle and yin classes offer that time to really slow down, a more meditative time, giving you space to turn inward and tune into both your mind and the physical sensations of your body. In Yin, you’re holding poses for a longer period of time (around 3-6mins) it helps you stretch and lengthen those rarely-used tissues while also teaching you how to breathe through sensations and sit with your thoughts. The practice of yin yoga is based on ancient Chinese philosophies (TCM) and Taoist principles which believe there are pathways of Qi (energy) that run through our bodies. By stretching and deepening into poses, we’re opening up any blockages and releasing that energy to flow freely.

About Alex

There is nothing like yoga, to me it is the ultimate tonic for the body, breath and mind.

Ideally this tonic gives us what we need to support and nourish our body, breath and mind. Sometimes it 'tastes' delicious on all levels, and other times not! But that's the beauty of a yoga practice, it simply asks us to turn up and be present, honest and real, encouraging us to observe, to process, absorb and filter, and some days we find that place within us, that of stillness and calm. Other days it just provides us with time to stop, bring us back to our body, breath and mind, and receive what we need in that moment.

I have been practicing yoga for over 25 years and teaching for 20, after completing a three-year training program in 2001 with the founders of Yoga Synergy, Simon Borg-Olivier and Bianca Machliss (both Physiotherapists). Since then I've been lucky to learn from many more amazing teachers (see bottom of the page for details).

I see myself as a modern day yogii; juggling the typical demands of living and working in Sydney with a family, whilst trying to maintain a healthy balance of family time, work, play and quiet.

My love of yoga, I hope, is reflected in my classes.  We all come to yoga with different intentions, and I'd like to think that I can offer a class that resonates with each and every person who attends, whether that is on a physical, emotional, spiritual level or simply gives people space and time to breath.

Along with teaching yoga I also have a part time corporate job as a business manager, I'm proud to volunteer for Lifeline on the phones, and in 2024 I'm going back to study; Sport and Exercise Science at Macquarie University, with the aim to do a Master's in Physiotherapy.

I have 3 awesome (most of the time) kids - 18, 16 and 12 and 2 dogs... life is busy but yoga and meditation gives me the space and the steadiness that I need to appreciate life and helps me navigate all that comes my way - the ups and the downs, real life.

Yoga Background

As a qualified Yoga Synergy teacher, I ran the Yoga Synergy School in Manly, for over 11 years, this evolved into the Yoga Co-operative Manly.  Manly Yoga Centre approached me to start teaching for them, which is where I predominantly taught for a number of years, along with covers at Qi Natural Therapies (when owned by Mark O'Brien) and private classes. With the sad closure of Manly Yoga Centre in 2019 I have started teaching at a few new venues, including being back at the Scout Hall in the idyllic Ivanhoe Park in Manly and permanent classes at two awesome studios - Modern Movement in Balgowlah and Kai Yoga in Mosman.

Although originally trained in the Yoga Synergy style I have attended courses to teach Yin, Prenatal, Seniors, Seniors Chair Yoga and Kids Yoga. I have been fortunate to study with many International and local teachers, including Clive Sheridan, Shandor Remete, Donna Farhi, Indra Mohan, Sarah Manning and David Burgess. I have taken their knowledge and integrated it into my classes, to provide students with a wonderful experience; for the body, breath and mind.

Keen to get a better understanding of yoga postures, nervous about joining a group class, or returning from an injury. Private or small group options are available. Simply give me a call to discuss.
